I really appreciated their openness and enthusiasm to take on our project and for their support throughout the entire build process. They were sceptical about the colour initially but were happy to follow my lead and supported my decisions.
I have always liked the old corrugated sheds as they are quintessential country, but also because of the colour so it was an aesthetic decision. It was also an ideological one, as corrugated metal is also very eco-friendly and can be recycled which was important. Choice was practical – COLORBOND® is great in the fire prone countryside and can be quickly and economically assembled.
I simply love the colour Monument® and the way the walls reflect light and shadow so it changes colour and blends perfectly in the landscape. I also love having the clerestory windows. The elevation to the high windows makes the small house appear so much bigger and provide a view of the sky and the louvres allow ventilation.
We had a very strong sense of the design we wanted and were limited to certain size specifications from council, so the process was actually pretty straight forward. I spent time playing with drawings and when we agreed on the configuration and design ideas we handed our concept drawings to an architect to put into appropriate form and then we talked it through with Newcastle Sheds N More. Ranbuild converted the architectural drawings to engineering plans and construction instructions- 5 pages became over 100.
People advised us not to design, project manage and build but the teams at Ranbuild and Newcastle Sheds N More made the whole thing very straightforward and the finished project is just what I envisaged- so yes, they took the dream and made it real.

The team at Mareeba are always reliable, efficient and easy to do business with! Both with our sheds and gas deliveries.
(actually more than once I guess?) We recently completed our 4th build with them. A shed/house, machinery shed and stage 1 & 2 of Kitty Cattery. They have always maintained professional service and delivered on time, every time.

Shed installer for Outdoor Steel Solutions VIC.
I work on a team of two and install the sheds for customers of Outdoor Steel Solutions.
I’ve always loved doing things with my hands, building, working on cars. I recently finished building my house, with a large deck, dog kennels and dog runs, which was a fantastic and rewarding experience.

Customers sometimes get a bit funny, but when you get in there and do the work well, it goes away. I work in one of seven install teams of two people, if it’s a big job we can move around to help other teams get the project finished on time.
Stay positive. Don’t let other people’s perception dictate what you can do or get in the way of what a great job that you do.

Carpenter /Sole trader
I own my own carpentry business that deals with all aspect of building from start to completion. Including new builds, renovations, extension and redesigns. I like to say leave us your house and we will give you back a home.
My dad’s a builder so I grew up spending all my free time going with him to jobs site or building stuff in his shed. I guess you could say it’s in my blood and it’s all I’ve ever really wanted to do.

Finding good reliable trades to work with. Oh and juggling! You’ve got to learn to juggle, there’s always so much going on and so many people needing your attention that you can easily find yourself dropping the ball.
I was luck enough have the support of my father when getting into the industry but the thing I learnt from him is gender is irrelevant as long as you do the job. So don’t let gender be the focus. You’re there for the love of the job, let that shine through and show them how capable you are.

Owner of Williams Design Consultancy.
Building designer. Creating house plans, new or house renovation, create client concept and designs on paper, conduct site visits, measure up, draft plans.
Growing up I liked to draw up plans of the house I wanted to build, the one I wanted to live in; my dream home. I went through hospitality so that I could travel, but when I got back I thought, hospitality is not for me, so I went and got my diploma in Architectural technology.
I worked in drafting offices from 2005 creating plans and design for houses, sheds and other structures. I opened Williams Design Consultancy in 2015 as there was an opportunity for diversity of projects and a better work life balance. It gave me the ability to spend more time with my son whilst still working creatively.
It’s challenging with some customers having to prove you can do the work in a male dominated industry. However once you get over those hurdles, it’s rewarding to see the outcome and a satisfied customer.
To go for it. There needs to be quality in what you’re doing and a passion for what you are doing. As long as you can keep up, and keep it up, you’ll make it.
